Los Murales de Segundo Barrio Tour
El Segundo Barrio has been the first home for thousands of families in El Paso since the 1880s. The adobe neighborhood has been described as “the Ellis Island of the Border.” Emblematic of Mexican and Chicano culture, learn about the renaissance of the Mexican mural tradition in El Paso by exploring the murals of El Segundo Barrio.
-Learn about more than 15 murals in the Segundo Barrio spanning over the past 20 decades and how they compare to the murals of Tom Lea.
-Understand the themes, artists, and symbolism of the Segundo Barrio Murals
-Explore murals that depict Mexican and Indigenous motifs, as well as political statements and historical stories.
Itinerary:
– Meet in front of Father Rahm mural at 10:00 am.
– Walk about a square mile in the neighborhood; not advised for those with limited mobility.
– After the tour, attendees may join the group for a no-host lunch at El Chewco.
