This free event invites youth ages 5 to 18 to celebrate and explore Día de los Muertos through the ancestral grain of amaranth. Led by artist and culture bearer Ome Tlaloc, participants will create their own no-bake amaranth bars while learning about the cultural, spiritual, and culinary significance of this ancient grain. Native to Central and South America, amaranth grows throughout the Paso del Norte region but is often regarded as a weed. Despite its importance to Indigenous cultures for thousands of years, Spanish colonizers discouraged its use due to its role in religious ceremonies, which they viewed as a challenge to the spread of Catholicism.
Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis, and all participants must be accompanied by an adult during the workshop.
