The INSIDER spoke with event coordinator Ruben Holguin about the Mariachi Loco Music Festival and how he, “Keeps Calm and Mariachis On.” The festival is scheduled to make Mother’s Day weekend one for the books in the heart of Downtown El Paso, May 8th though the 10th.
Q. What spurred you to create this event and was it easy to find local talent?
A. It was a no brainer, El Paso deserves one, as far as local talent, not difficult to find talent yet intriguing – lots of diversity and the opportunity for people to make a name for themselves and further their artistic career.
Q. How are you handling the changes with the San Jacinto Plaza delay?
A. Our event was planned on the streets surrounding San Jacinto, this is a Mariachi festival for El Pasoans by El Pasoans and not a park festival. We would have liked the park access but don’t control that. Our philosophy is “Keep Calm and Mariachi On.”
Q. Will this be a one-time event?
A. We have a commitment to make this a yearly event on Mother’s Day weekend every year going forward with the city. We are already planning 2016 with local and national talent.
Q. Even though San Jacinto Park isn’t available, why Downtown to begin with?
A. San Jacinto is in the Heart of El Paso, with all of the work being done by the DMD and City Reps it is the perfect place for an event of this magnitude, we wouldn’t have had it anywhere else.
Q. Are there any surprises in store for attendees?
A. The competition on Friday is a high school competition amongst different school districts that will be judged by the public and social media. The winner will be announced on Sunday both at the event and on all social media avenues. On top of that, the amazing ropers we have planned and live music after 10 is a great way celebrate Mom as a family. With this wide array of entertainment this event is for everyone.
Q. What are the costs to attend the festival?
A. It is affordable, $10 cover and Moms get in free every day for the first two hours, kids under 12 are free and 5 bucks for military makes this event well rounded.
