The shopping district in Downtown El Paso is a cultural mecca for international visitors looking for that concentrated flavor of commerce. Nearly every day is bustling with El Pasoans, Mexican nationals and tourists keen on great deals on clothes, gifts and food! Seeing an opportunity to provide quality food to an active border community in Downtown El Paso, owner Hugh Zheng opened Hong Kong Express at 601 South El Paso Street.
One visit to the restaurant and you can clearly see the ambition and optimism in the care taken to make the building and its design reflect quality. More than just a fresh coat of paint, the building has been professionally revitalized. In addition, the state of the art equipment used in the kitchen is on par with the best restaurants.
Tina Zhu, Manager of the Hong Kong Express said, “We wanted people to experience Chinese food where everything is made fresh. We don’t do a lot of advertising but we have a lot of repeat business from positive word of mouth.”
Tina is the clear face of the restaurant, greeting everyone as they enter with enthusiasm. She exhibits authenticity and concern but never drops her professionalism. “We feel that people coming from all over, especially from just over the border are tired and hungry so we want to feed them well and give them a nice place to eat,” said Tina.
Tina was not shy about offering advice on health and eating well, recommending their hot green tea made from fresh tea leaves, as opposed to pre-packaged tea. “We are all about what is natural, we may pay more in over-head but we prefer to give high quality food to everyone,” said Tina.
The menu boasts Chinese-American favorites like Mongolian Beef, Beef with Broccoli and Mango Chicken but the public has been strongly responding to their new selection of Bubble Milk Teas and fruit milk shakes as well.
The team at the restaurant is courteous and truly go out of their way to assist you. Downtown traffic in the shopping district is diverse and colorful but with the international bridge only a block away, Tina makes a great point, “Every customer deserves a good experience, because we are so close to the border we are like ambassadors of America.”
