SUMMARY:Losar: Creation of a Tibetan Buddhist Sand Mandala
DESCRIPTION:The El Paso Museum of History is excited to announce the opening of our latest pop-up exhibition\, Losar: A Tibetan Buddhist Sand Mandala. During this live installation\, visitors will be able to view and meet with the Venerable Lama Losang Samten as he creates a Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala. The installation will take place Tuesday\, February 24 through Saturday\, February 28 from 10 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm each day. On Saturday\, February 28 it will be unveiled as part of the museum’s Lunar New Year Celebration. \nIn Buddhist cultures\, Losar means the Tibetan New Year and is celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar Tibetan calendar. The Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala is often created during Losar or for special healing ceremonies as it is an intricate\, sacred art form representing the blue Medicine Buddha’s healing power and wisdom. Crafted over several days using colored sand and chakpur (metal funnels)\, it symbolizes and releases healing energy for the world. \n*Note: the museum is closed to the public on Tuesday\, February 24. If you would like to view the installation on this day\, we do ask that you schedule a visit by sending an email to the address below. People without a reservation will not be permitted. Wednesday through Friday the public can stop by at any time to view the creation of the sand mandala. No reservation required. \nFor large groups\, please schedule a viewing by emailing Nora Rose at RoseN@elpasotexas.gov
