Starting this menu, Deadbeach Brewery (406 S. Durango St.) offers a flight of four (4) of their locally brewed flagship beers. The brewery is a show brewery, meaning the beer is brewed in-house at the bar location. We took an afternoon to speak with Deadbeach co-owner Justin Ordonez about their beers, downtown, and how beer awakens your senses.
Can you tell us all about your ownership?
DeadBeach Brewery is locally owned. All of the partners (Gabriel Montoya, Justin Ordonez, and Jason Hunt) are from El Paso born and raised. Gabriel and I started making beer in the garage while working at a restaurant together. Every Monday we would make a 5 gallon batch of beer trying out new recipes and working with local flavors. This was the beginning of DeadBeach.
As a local brewery why choose to open in Downtown El Paso?
Downtown El Paso is the heart of the city. We wanted to open downtown because in every other major city, downtown is where people go to get a true taste of what the city has to offer. El Paso’s downtown is experiencing a renaissance right now and DeadBeach is a part of that movement. Every major city downtown has a brewery that showcases the flavor of that city. We are El Paso’s flavor, our beer tastes like El Paso, rich, bold and full flavored with a variety of styles that suits any taste. We love downtown El Paso and are happy to call it home.
How does a beer play into pairing with food?
Beer is food. It comes from oats and fruit, it accompanies food in a very intricate way. The bitterness in beer can bring out flavors in food and the food brings out different flavors in beer. The two work hand in hand to complete an experience that captures all five senses.
The Authentico starter flight of beers are your 4 flagship beers. Can you elaborate about each of them and a little about how you brew them?
Each of our flagships represent a different taste profile, we did this because not everyone drinks the same type of beer. We wanted to offer, on a consistent basis, four beers that speak to different flavor personalities. All of our beer is brewed with love and hard work. We work hard to make beer for a city that works even harder.
Our DeadBeach Lager is an East coast style amber lager, smooth and full bodied, this beer shows lager drinkers what a full flavored lager is, only 4.5% abv (alcohol by volume), this beer is easy to drink and does not fall short of flavor.
The DeadBeach IPA is and entry level IPA that comes on very “hoppy” with a floral aroma and ends with a malty sweetness, we designed this IPA to be easy on the bitterness that most IPA’s are associated with, only 65 IBU’s (international bitterness units) this IPA is easy to drink and still packs a punch with a 6.5% abv.
Our Brown Bonnie is a classic American Brown Ale. This ale boasts roasted chocolate and coffee notes in the grain build. Full bodied and smooth, with a sweet and clean finish. Our Brown ale is a 6.0% abv and is a local favorite.
Our Abuela Imperial Stout is one of our favorites. Abuela Stout is a rich chocolate stout made with Chocolate Abuelita, a pound per barrel. We use a heavy variety of roasted malts and grain to make this thick and full bodied beer. This beer is a 7.9% beer that is sure to warm you up and make you feel like your abuelita made it herself.
