Every year around this time there is a burning desire to cast off bad habits and start anew. The New Year brings with it a fresh resolve and the will power to resist the seemingly relentless onslaught of holiday temptations in the form of food! Amongst the plethora of delectable restaurants in Downtown El Paso, there are a few that will allow for guilt free indulgence. Two in particular have defined themselves by the strict adherence to ingredients specifically chosen for their healthy contribution to our bodies.
The Green Ingredient, located on the ground floor of the Chase building in the heart of Downtown, has been feeding the local community for a little over half a year. More than just “feeding” the community, the restaurant seeks to educate and encourage a healthy lifestyle, “Our New Year’s resolution for 2014 is to help promote a healthy conscience to the El Paso area. We will be offering workshops on Saturdays this year consisting of two parts. First there will be a presentation on nutritional health and then a food tasting will follow,” said Hector Hernandez, a restaurant team member.
This year The Green Ingredient also hopes to expand hours to dinner not only on Friday evenings but Saturday as well.
The restaurant encourages the public to visit and discuss any ailments they may suffer from. The Green Ingredient is open to suggesting menu items or special remedies that might relieve symptoms such as “cough”. The Green Ingredient offers a special tea made with thyme and honey for just such an ailment.
New menu items are also in the works for 2014, such as Vegan Buffalo Hot Wings made out of cauliflower shaped similar to chicken wings that are tossed in a homemade sauce. All the menu items are vegan and vegetarian food and most products are also non-GMO (genetically modified).
In the business district of Downtown, mere moments away from the courthouse on Stanton street is a modest but charming eatery aptly named The Healthy Bite. Owned by young entrepreneur Paola Herrera, the eatery boasts a tasty menu of healthy menu choices sure to shave that holiday weight and get one back on track to better living.
Paola lives by this adage, “Quality over quantity. This means in the world of food, quality calories over quantity calories. It is easier for the body to process and absorb organic foods over foods made with saturated fats and chemically based additives.”
“I try to stay away from foods advertised as low-calorie or low-fat, they tend to me a chemical storm,” says Paola.
The Healthy Bite offers and emphasizes a juice diet but still offers a host of other solid food choices, like sandwiches and salads.
“Juicing means you are consuming a micro-nutrients so the body absorbs the nutrition right away. We add fruit to enhance the flavor of vegetables in the juice menu,” says Paola.
Paola also generously divulged the benefits of the different foods such as Beets, which help digestion, and Ginger which helps with stress problems.
The Healthy Bite offers a Turkey sandwich which Paola says is 99% fat free with an avocado, olive oil and mayo spread rich in Omega 3 fatty acids that promote brain health.
One of The Healthy Bite’s most popular salads is their Greek Salad: romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, kalamata olives and feta cheese are all living in harmony to create this healthful lunch item which will be a weekly offering in the DWNTWN Giveaway starting next week.
Paola reminds us, “Be conscious of what you put into your body.”
