The Downtown Management District (DMD) and the Central Business Association (CBA) have partnered to host the “Segundo Barrio Backback Drive,” for Sacred Heart Parish. In an effort to assist the church in collecting backpacks and school supplies for children in the historical community. The DMD and CBA have placed collection boxes at four (4) locations:
EPIC (nightclub) – 510 N. Stanton
La Morena – 315 E. Mills
Bar Fly – 11335 Montwood
DMD Offices – 201 E. Main Suite 107 (Chase building)
Donations for the drive will be accepted at these locations, from Monday, July, 18th through Friday, August 5th, 2016.
“We’re so happy to be partnering with the DMD and the CBA this year. I hope that this will be the first of many opportunities to unite in order to help our residents,” expressed, Father Ron Gonzales.
The last day of the Backpack Drive will also kick-off the “El Centro Back to School Weekend” on August 5, 6, and 7, 2016. The DMD and CBA are hosting this series of Tax Free/Back to School programming to provide the public with an opportunity to enjoy food and entertainment in addition to retail discounts traditionally found during this weekend each year.
Sponsoring businesses such as Krystal Jeans, and Starr Western Wear have helped to make this possible in addition to giving back to the community. Starr Western Wear is donating 100 Levi’s school supply kits to be inserted in the first 100 backpacks collected.
“It’s imperative that the DMD continues to work with entities such as the CBA and downtown businesses to support efforts that give back to the community. We are not only assisting Sacred Heart Parish in collecting much needed school supplies for children, but doing our part to liven up the El Centro Shopping District during Tax Free Weekend. The shops on the border bring an experience vastly different than any other in the country,” said Joe Gudenrath, DMD Executive Director.
