We finally get to spotlight a pair of shop owners working hard to “Keep it Authentico,” in Downtown El Paso (DTEP). The flower shop, aptly named Desert Modern Florals, is located inside the Cortez building on 310 N. Mesa, Suite G150. Shop owner Juliana Varkonyi, 22, was inspired by her mother, Mary Ibanez, 56, who once owned her own flower shop.
“I always admired my mom’s work, and thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’” she said.
Juliana recalls always wanting to own her own business, “I had a lot of different jobs and going to school for fashion design and business management, I had an idea about the kind of work involved,” she said.
Though her interests were in the related field of fashion design, Juliana eventually found herself in the same market her mother was in. “At the time my goals were to own a clothing or jewelry boutique, but I’ve always loved flowers and I knew my mom obviously loved flowers so one day I asked her if she wanted to help me start a flower shop.”
The location of flower shop is in a less obvious spot, sitting in the heart of the Cortez building, like a pearl in a shell except in this case its surrounded by delicious eateries. “A friend of my mom’s that works at a different flower shop saw this location while making a flower delivery in the building. So, we called the property owner and eventually got the location,” said Juliana.
Mary told us, “[The space] was already ready for us with no maintenance necessary, and we love that its close San Jacinto Plaza.”
Being a flower shop, the first thing you notice is the scent, the scent of fresh flowers is encapsulated in the central suite of the building. The next thing you notice is the quasi-desert-bohemian décor, but the lasting impression are the smiles of this mother, daughter duo.
Be on the lookout for workshops for wreath-making, floral arranging, and more.
