Soccer or futbol, is an international sport, followed globally by an estimated 3.5 billion fans according to mostpopularsports.net. Clearly, there is a demand for it, and we’re curious as to how our very own Locomotive FC will march forth given the current health orders. We spoke to Andrew Forrest, the Locomotive FC General Manager for some answers to some of our questions.
DTEP: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. So, given the challenges presented this year, we know it’s not easy navigating social distance in regard to spectator sports. Please, let us know how you’re handling the first couple of home games coming up?
AF: We decided to have no fans for our first two games as a precaution due to the surging cases in Texas. While we have many protocols approved by the City and are confident we could have put on a safe and enjoyable match day experience for all fans, we decided to err on the side of caution for the first two matches. We have worked tirelessly for months for multiple scenarios and are well prepared to welcome fans back to Southwest University Park safely when the time is right.
DTEP: Do fans have an opportunity to watch home games since they cannot physically attend games?
AF: Yes, all home and away games will be on ESPN+. Select home games, including our home opener on July 11th at 7:30pm, will be available locally on the CW. The full list of home games will be available on our website, eplocomotivefc.com/2020schedule.
DTEP: With the decision not to have fans in the bleachers for safety reasons, how else can fans support the team?
AF: Fans are encouraged to watch from home on ESPN+ or the CW to catch all Locomotive action. Other places to get up to date info are by following us on social media and by downloading our new app. Finally, we have a program called the “Cutout Conductors” where fans can submit a picture of themselves and get a lifelike chloroplast cutout that we will put in the stands on game day! More info can be found at eplocomotivefc.com/cutoutconductors.
DTEP: Finally, in terms of gameplay and the team itself, what have you learned and how are you strategizing differently going into the second season?
AF: We have added more players that make us stronger, faster, and bigger on the field; areas that were exposed last year at various points. We did this while keeping the core of the 2019 Western Conference Finalist team intact, which makes us confident that we will have a competitive and exciting team for our fans to watch.
