El Pasoans and Downtown – What a peculiar relationship. Not a new one, perhaps a relationship that has been neglected like a childhood friend you haven’t written, visited and seen in years. In fact it may have been a neglectful relationship with a falling out of sorts. Then one day, they’re in your life again. The first few social situations will be a bit awkward, until it feels like it used to.
Some El Pasoans treat Downtown like that awkward friend, unsure what to do with it yet … “Do we drive in Downtown? Do we walk? I’m not sure what to do here.” How about you split the difference and take a pedicab?
Husband and wife team Deana and Oscar Estrada chose to provide that option to pedestrians in the pulsing growth of Downtown revitalization by opening Pedicabs El Paso (PEP). Formerly in the tourism business and more recently the automobile rental industry the couple chose to be a noteworthy part of this historical urban reawakening, “We saw this revitalization and believed in it. The parking situation presented an opportunity and we saw the potential of the [pedicab] bikes,” said Deana Estrada.
Deana and Oscar felt the responsibility of educating people about the changes in Downtown, “While in the tourism business people would always claim there was nothing to do in El Paso, but now we can actually show them there is something to do in Downtown El Paso.”
The business model of PEP allows drivers to earn more through tips and the revenue of the business itself is chiefly generated via the advertising on the Pedicabs themselves and business sponsorships. The ride itself is free to customers but tipping the driver is encouraged, as this is their source of income. There is no set cost for a ride downtown unless the distance exceeds one (1) mile.
Fans of the service, Fernie and Emily the intern of the KLAQ morning show have endorsed the Pedicabs. The positive feedback has created partnerships with Baconfest and now the upcoming Downtown Streetfest where you can surely take advantage of the service on June 26 and 27.
Pedicabs El Paso, does more than provide reverse valet to your parked car from a Downtown business. PEP also offers extensive tours of the districts, as well as weddings, parties, and they will even pick up your drunk friend at the bar and ride him/her to a Downtown hotel for safety.
How much we take from Downtown leans heavily on how we see it, and the Estradas see the urban stretch of El Paso in such a positive light that it’s infectious. Add that romantic veneer to your next date or outing and call Pedicabs El Pasoto reserve a ride at (915) 443-9934
