In conjunction with the exhibit, “Traces: A Visual Record of the Deconstruction of the ASARCO Smelter,” the El Paso Museum of History is pleased to present Ron Leiman who will give an illustrated lecture on, “Copper: El Paso and the Southwest.” The lecture will take place in the exhibit’s Orientation Theater on Thursday evening, June 7, 2012, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program is free and open to all.

Of the five “c’s” credited with the economic development of El Paso, none were as high profile as copper. This presentation will include information on the ASARCO, Federal and International Copper Smelters and the Phelps Dodge Copper Refinery in El Paso, Texas. Copper mines, other smelters, refineries and rod and wire companies will be discussed along with the railroad connections that made El Paso a key hub in the copper industry in the 20th century. A discussion on what the future may hold for the remaining buildings and smokestacks at the site will take place with audience participation welcome.
